The Gluster Community and CentOS

Some of you have been asking what the Red Hat + CentOS deal means for the Gluster Community, so we’re writing this in response to those inquiries. Some of us work for Red Hat, but the Gluster Community made the strategic decision to explicitly support all distributions, not just those in the Red Hat/RPM universe. The CentOS announcement doesn’t change anything in that regard, and our goal is still to be at the center of open source big data and cloud storage. The Gluster Community is for everyone and all distributions.

We have been in discussions with the CentOS developers for some time about streamlining the process of adding new GlusterFS releases, so that CentOS users don’t have to wait for the RHEL->CentOS process to update dependencies needed for recent GlusterFS releases. In general, we are in favor of anything that brings GlusterFS to a wider audience and expands the Gluster Community. This is why we started discussions with Illumos and Joyent folks about putting GlusterFS into those releases. It’s why we’ve been courting Ubuntu users and developers for a very long time. It’s why we started releasing *SUSE builds. And it’s why we support the NetBSD community’s inclusion of GlusterFS.

Eventually, we would like to see easily-deployable, “live” images of GlusterFS for all major *nix distributions. If you would like to see this happen for your distribution, please do reach out to the gluster-devel mailing list or start a project on the Gluster Forge. This is one of our top priorities for 2014.

Happy Hacking!

The initial rounds of conversation around the planning of content for release 8 has helped the project identify one key thing – the need to stagger out features and enhancements over multiple releases. Thus, while release 8 is unlikely to be feature heavy as previous releases, it will be the...
